What is Rosacea ?

Rosacea is a common medical condition that makes the patient’s face flushed showing signs of blushing, coarseness of skin and pimples.

Symptoms

The main sign of patients suffering from Rosacea is the redness of their cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. In rare cases, this redness appears on their neck, head, ears or chest.

After some time, the broken blood vessels start showing through the skin that will thicken and swell up. Some of the other symptoms experienced by Rosacea patients are:

  • Facial flushing
  • Skin redness
  • Small cysts
  • A stinging and burning sensation of skin
  • Thickening of the facial tissue
  • Red bumps and pustules
  • Blushing
  • Rough and dry skin patches
  • Swollen and bulb-shaped nose

Causes

Some of the main causes of Rosacea are:

  • Family History
  • Problems in the blood vessels can cause the redness of the facial skin.
  • Mites that live on our skin are usually harmless but if their number exceeds the normal level then it can irritate the skin.
  • Bacteria like the H.Pylori present in the gut can increase the amount of digestive hormone called gastrin, leading to a flushed skin.
  • Hot drinks and spicy foods
  • Alcohol
  • Sunlight or wind
  • Exercise
  • Cosmetics
  • Medications like the blood pressure ones that help dilate the blood vessels
Rosacea Pink Face Treatment

Doctors might prescribe medications to manage the skin redness, bumps and other symptoms of Rosacea, as there is no complete cure for it yet. The doctors might prescribe some of the following medications for skin redness treatment:

  • Brimonidine is a gel, which tightens blood vessels in the skin to get rid of some of the redness.
  • Azelaic acid is a gel and foam to clear up bumps, swelling, and redness.
  • Metronidazole (Flagyl) and doxycycline are antibiotics that kill bacteria on the skin and bring down redness and swelling.
  • Isotretinoin is an acne drug that clears up skin bumps. Do not use it if you're pregnant as it can cause serious birth defects.
  • Lasers using intense light to get rid of bigger blood vessels
  • Dermabrasion is the process that will sand off the top layer of the skin.
  • Electrocautery is the process where an electric current is used to zap the damaged blood vessels.
Home remedies
  • Natural remedies like dilute vinegar cleansing and green tea applications may be useful in rosacea.
  • Vinegar, a natural disinfectant, can help decrease the number of yeasts and bacteria on the skin.
  • Green tea soaks to the face may help to decrease the redness and inflammation seen in rosacea. It has anti-inflammatory properties.
